Overview
Withings scale users disengage fast. At day 7, 35% open the app the same day they weigh themselves. By month 3, that drops to 17%. Weight alone wasn't keeping users active, even though 40% had set a goal of 10 kg or more. The previous Food Intake view depended on manual calorie entry through a third-party app (MyFitnessPal), which created friction without creating direction. Users had data but no path forward: no actionable suggestions, no link between today's actions and their goal, no way to understand progress.
Body Balance reframes the scale from a measurement device into a motivational checkpoint. The shift was conceptual: from a raw-data view to an objective-oriented experience built on a Target → Factors → Suggestion framework. Body Balance is a high-level motivational indicator that shows whether users are moving toward their weight goal, with or without a food log. It's structured in 12 core bricks across 4 layers (Header, Status Breakdown, Recommendations, Progression) and runs on an algorithm that converts weight targets into body composition targets, builds a personalized trajectory, and estimates retrospective calorie balance between weigh-ins. To remove the food-logging friction that killed the previous version, you only need to step on the scale to get an estimate of your calorie intake.
